All you wanted to know about Dimples
Dimples have always caught our attention! Across the globe, they are considered a sign of beauty. Dimples are actually formed due to a defect in the facial mimetic muscle of smile called Zygomaticus Major. The skin lying over this defect gets wedged into this defect fusing with the underlying deeper tissue, creating the dimple.
Naturally occurring dimples are rare, only about 15-18% of the human population has naturally occurring ones. Hence they are highly sought after!
The dimple creation surgery is straightforward and completely scar-free as the tiny scar is inside the mouth. It can be done under local of general anaesthesia. The dimple can be placed where you like, but there are some limitations which the surgeon will explain. After making the intra oral incision, depending on where you want the dimple, a suture is passed through. This connects your skin to the underlying muscle and tissue, creating the dimple. Sometimes for creating a deeper, more pronounced dimple, a small chunk of soft tissue is removed and absorbable sutures are used to connect the dermis with the submucosa. No stitch removal is required in this case.
Dimple creation is a safe day-care procedure with minimal complications. It only takes around 30 minutes. You can go home after the surgery. You can resume your daily activities from the same day itself.
- It will take anywhere from a couple of weeks to months for surgically made dimples to look natural. Initially, the dimple will be visible even when you are not smiling (static dimple). It will animate only after a few weeks/months.
- Facial movements may be slightly hindered or impaired. This will recover spontaneously. You are advised to consume a soft bland diet for about a week.
